Gallic D helmet
#1
Does anyone have a good copy of the tinted photograph of the Imperial Gallic D helmet. Big Grin (

Does anyone know if the cheek hinge is actually held by the silver rosettes. In Robinsons picture they appear to be too shallow and thin to house a rivet stud. Not to mention their placement is not in line with the hinge.

Like in many of the other Gallic helmets, the rivets that hold the hinge are usually at the level of the brow band. This begs the question that possibly there are rivets holding the hinge piece on the Gallic D behind the browband. :?: Since trying to pound a heavy rivet against the silver rosettes would cause damage to them :?:

Just as I believe that the heavy rivet on the Gallic G that goes through the browband near the ear guard is actually holding the hinge piece not the brass rosettes by the temple. :?:

Any assistance on the picture would be appreciated

Thanks

Here's Dr Mike Thomas' description for the Gallic D

"Two rivets attached the hinge for each cheekpiece to the bowl, their heads decorated with red enamel, further enhanced by silver (or silvered) embossed rosette washers through which the rivet heads had been passed".

You say that the rosettes are too shallow and thin to house a rivet stud. Rivets don't always have a domed head. Some are completely flat. Some are also small like nails allowing the enamel/coral inlay decoration to be applied on top.

You're correct about the Gallic G hinge plate being attached by the single rivet seen on the fluted brow band.
