Lateral Transfer

The question that I have is concerning lateral transfers from one legion to another by a carrier soldier. Is there any historical evidence of legionaries requesting, or being requested to transfer to other units. This may be for promotional options, to serve with friends and family, to serve close to home, or possibly at the request of a father or higher ranking family member. I know for myself, I am able to map out my carrier in the military by gaining certain benefits and experience by transferring to other units. Was a legionary able to do the same?
