Check out my new Phalerae!
#16
Could you send me some of those pics Crispvs? Also, do you have any pictures of cut out ones, as seen here:

Also, the ones just past the phalerae show roman coins being used as decoration....are those also phalerae?

Check this one out...i could make that one for sure:

Yes glass phalerae look great, especially if medium or deep blue, but you can do them red, orange, black, etc..., really classy...

You could do them by cold liquid glass casting, the look is the same, but you'd not be accurate...

What about using a clear resin, or tinted clear resin Daniele and used that as the casting material?

Great pics btw.

Yes, you could, anyway in the fine art stores overhere, that excellent liquid glass is sold: many colors, cristal clear or opalescent (you need opalescent), if I recall it's a european product... I believe that if you decide to go on fake glass, you can use resine too. And silicone molds.

Magnus,

When you say "cut out", do you mean the torcs worn by Cn. Musius and M. Caelius or do you mean the 'openwork phalerae' from the Guttment collection? These latter look to me like baldric phalerae from third century equipment but without seeing them in the flesh I could not say for sure. I have the relevant catalogues from Christie's but I doubt that they would tell me much more. I can check though.

Regarding coins as phalerae, I am afraid I do not know enough about phalerae to be able to say yes or no. However, the ones shown show Antoninus Pius and Septimius Severus, both a little late for you I think.

As to the other one you posted a link to, my first thought on seeing it was that it was a cavalry harness juction but you may be right. Again someone with more knowledge of either phalerae or cavalry harnesses might be useful here.

Yeah, I meant the openwork ones.

Daniele, I couldn't find your cold liquid glass kits, but I did find clear epoxy that is specifically used for makig decorative items. You can also add opaque and transparent pigments to it to colour it. It should give the same effect though, and it's fairly inexpensive. Worth trying out anyway. I'll keep you all posted when I try it.

Yes, very nice indeed. I would love to see some of these [replicas of genuine phalerae] offered for sale. Even though I'm not a reenactor, I'd want to purchase some as inspirational decorations for my study.

Quote:If you want phalerae that REALLY look special, you could try getting a set of glass paherae done. There were two in the third link Gabinius posted and I can send you pictures of several more (or perhaps it was only three - I forget now) from Vindonissa. One of these still retained (if I recall correctly) the brass setting which held it to the straps. The blue glass would really look something special. Find someone who is good at carving and enjoys it and then take the resultant copies to someone who does glass casting.

Crispvs

Crispvs,

Could I get you to send me pics of those glass phalarae you mentioned. I've gotten into glass work and I think I might like to try my hand at making some.

Thanks very much,
