Quote:As I get older, I think Lovecraft was onto something. Forget the squiggle-faced gods, the stilted dialogue and the absurd plots. The basis of the horror in all Lovecraft's writing was a single premise: the only thing that allows us to stay sane is that we can never truly understand what the universe really like. Again and again, Lovecraft's characters get just a tiny glimpse of the real cosmos and are instantly driven insane. Every new discovery of physics and cosmology seems to confirm his vision.
Spot on.
It's despair porn. I think that's why no truly Lovecraftian movie has ever been made (except tongue-in-cheek). It's too heavy, too hobbesian.

I personally feel that the reason no true Lovecraft movie has been made is simply because we all create the fear differently in our heads. To someone else the movie Dagon may be a true vision of Lovecraftian horror, but to others it falls short.
