Late Romans in USA
#1
If there are any late Romans in the USA I'd appreciate if you'd drop me a line and let me know where you are. There are numerous Republican and Imperial units all over the U.S. but finding a Late Roman (edited) is a challenge.

I'm putting together a 4th c impression (a la Piazza Armerina) and also a 6th c impression. Earlier periods hold very little interest for me.

I know a ton of Late Romans but they're all SCA, as am I. They run a wide spectrum from "hey, I'm really serious about recreating accurate gear" to "hey, I've got two stripes on my tunic so I must be a Late Roman".

No, Brother, I was not being ironic.

I changed my first post once the moderator edited the original post in the thread.

I honestly wish him the best of luck in finding others with which he can enjoy his hobbies and interests. That's what RAT is all about. Big Grin

I know Viking Age re-enactors in the States who have similar problems and, whilst they could find plenty of 'Authentic SCA' compadres who had high standards, in the end starting an independent group was just the start of the quest for clear agreement.

The trouble is, the SCA already has such a HUGE following, and there's quite a bit of organization and governance already in place. So it's hard to motivate people to break off and build a whole new group from scratch. For most people (especially lazy ones like me) it's much easier to stay within the context of the SCA and just limit your association to folks who take their craft more seriously. Plus there's the added bonus that SCA events provide an endless parade of clueless pajama-clad nitwits to snigger at.

And I have to be brutally honest here, there's just SOMETHING about being in a charge or a shieldwall of 500 guys as opposed to 5 guys. Even if half those guys look like their documentation is a cross between LOTR and Mad Max.

On this list, there's Theodosius, Jeffrey Greene (who seems to have vamnished since last year) and L.E. Pearson.

I also know of Dave Kufner who runs the Segontium forum and Luke Knowlton. There are others, of course.

Dan,

I'm not in a Republican unit, but I do have a Republican impression ca 60-40 BC.

The proposed Third Cohort of Legio VI FFC is slated to be a late Republican unit of about the time of the Gallic Wars/Civil Wars and possibly early Augustan era.
