Avete,

I have downloaded the guidebook and read it, but am wondering about the format for the event.

First and foremost, everyone here owes you a debt of gratitude for all of the hard work that you guys put into Lafe all year, every year, to make it a great event.

My concern, however, is that this event seems overly reliant on needlefelt "combat." I've read about the "Immunes" Cohort, and it seems that those guys who do not believe that needlefelt "combat" is either:
a) what they got into the hobby to do, or
b) is completely unrealistic,
are being relegated to second-class participation.

It would seem with the great facility, superb organization/organizers, and willing participants that we have in this hobby, that we could have an event that is less reliant on a schoolyard game and more reliant on re-creating events from the lives of Roman Legionaries of AD 43.

Respectfully,

Needlefelt is not the main focus of Lafe. Of course, needlefelt is better than getting hit with a wooden sword, but it's not real.
The event will have live steel 100% operations and needlefelt operations for those who want to 'shieldbash'. Since most of any real soldiers life is non-combat, related to training, day to day chores, fixing food, guard mount, and missions other than combat, you should expect to see that much more than needlefelt shield bashing.

There is a change, there will NOT be an immunes "cohort". Immunes will be in the regular units, just as the Romans did it! When they must fall out to fulfill their skilled additional duties, then they will; otherwise they will be training and working with their unit.

Dear Caius,

That is good news -- perhaps an update to the handbook is in order? Smile

I think that everyone associated with Lafe is to be commended, but an event that is portrayed as a very realistic, immersion, event should focus less on something as unrealistic as needlefelt.

The Lafe immersion experience starts in one week!
BTW, I will be buying a drink at the tavern for RAT members on Saturday PM, if you have got your centurion's permission to be out of camp and off duty, and you don't have guard duty later in the evening!
To get your free drink come up to me and say hello.
The sign will be 'Jenny' the counter sign will be 'Jasper'.

Alas my friends, I had to tell Mark a week ago that I will be unable to come, my promotional process at work got scheduled on LAFE friday, and the attitude is if it is not important to you, then do not be there (no makeups allowed, even for pre-scheduled leave... gotta love bureaucracy). So I had to make the call to stay and do it. I will have your traveling in my prayers, and I will be there in thought. Have a lot of fun without me. Will be there next year.
