Just a few things:

1) Saul your 8mm shirt is on the way!
2) And more general to the group. The shirt (8mm or 6mm) can be supplied with veggie tanned liner - and will be moving forward - not sure why my supplier used the chrome tanned leather for the 6mm prototype.

I am accepting orders for both shirts now.

Chris, can you also specify to your supplier that the leathered bottom hem is not required?

It may save you and us a few dollars per shirt!

Sure. If this is the general concensus on what people want.

I think Mike Daniels originally requested the liner on the bottom.

I doubt this constitutes a significant price difference as most of the cost for chainmail is the labor.

But can it be retained? Marcus Favonius Facilis seems to have a bottom hem...

Just got my hamata in the mail and it is truly a thing of beauty! Smile I am quite pleased.

I think you might be able to answer these for me, Edge. I was wondering, though, it came with three buttons, one to connect the breast hooks and the others on to which I connect the breast hook to the flaps. I see, though, that most other impressions carry four buttons on the flaps (two per flap). Is this more accurate, then? And I suppose taking the button leather off is also part of that? I was thinking about removing, but am a little weary of doing anything that involves my hands and handiwork--results can be quite disastrous.

Saul,

Yes -- you need five buttons in all. Three for the hooks, and two to secure the bottom flaps of the cape to the shirt.

Send me a note and I can tell you how to make additional buttons, or can show you in Mobile.

Look at the pic posted at the front of this thread.

I would also de-galvanize it and remove the leather trim from the hem.

I plan on degalvanizing the armour today using the vinegar method--will the leather be damaged if I leave it on during this process? And I also plan on removing the bottom hem, but I am may need to snip off a row or two to make it shorter as it nearly comes to my knees.

Saul,

Send me an email at edward.gibbons(no spam)@us.army.mil and I will send you a step-by-step process to de-galvanize the hamata.

Yes, you will have to remove the leather and re-attach it if you do this.

My hamata was not galvanized, but I removed all of the leather it came with and replaced it with veg-tanned leather and a complete leather backing for the shoulder doubling. I can send you that, too.

Brothers,

If you want to de-galvanize this hamata and replace the leather, here are the steps I would use:

-- Purchase about 3 gallons of white vinegar and dump it into a 5-7 gallon bucket.

-- Remove the leather trim, and drop the mail in the bucket.

-- Let it soak for 8-12 hours. The mail should turn from a silver color to a dark grey color.

-- Rinse with cold/tap water and immediately begin drying off with shop towels.

-- Coat with about one can of WD-40 till you can see it shimmer with the stuff.

-- Let air dry in a warm dry room with good air circulation such as a ceiling fan or floor fan.

-- Brush clean with a old fashioned scrub brush to remove any rust that will initially appear and wipe off with a shop towel. Coat again with WD-40 and continue to dry.

-- Once dry, reattach leather trim that came with it or your own.

-- Always dry and soak in a well ventilated area such as a open garage or back porch.

-- Put on an expendable piece of clothing, put on hamata, and do some side straddle hops and jumping around to insure any rust spotting is removed.

-- Treat leather with neatsfoot or or other type of leather protector.

-- Coat again with WD-40.

Hope this is helpful to those who want to de-galvanize their hamate. Big Grin
