Birdheadhandles?
#1
In this photo taken from the Arc de Orange there is a few swords with handles with some cind of birdhead shape...

http://www.archart.it/archart/europa/Fr ... age18.html

... What is it, does this have a special name or clasification? Is there any Archeological finds that equal them? What timeframe are they?

The put me in mind of some bogfinds from nothern europe. I have a photo at home of what I mean but alas I´m at work and don´t have internet access at home.

I'm personally not so sure, but you could be right.

Considering the date, I highly doubt they are falcatae.

He had with him the selfsame rifle you see with him now, all mounted in german silver and the name that he\'d give it set with silver wire under the checkpiece in latin: Et In Arcadia Ego. Common enough for a man to name his gun. His is the first and only ever I seen with an inscription from the classics. - Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

Only one hilt joins the guard in a position which would fit in with a falcata ... the others join centrally.

My biggest problem with them being falcatae is they have an eagle's head as seen on sculptures of definitely Roman subjects, and the hilt assembly is centred with the eagle pommel not returning down all the way. I think they are definitely Roman officer swords.

Also the two ring suspension sytem either side of the scabbard indicates a straight sword as the falcata had rings on one side only.

It's the eagle heads - aka Jupiter and symbol of Rome. And the fact there are other examples of Roman origin just like them.
