Khan Aspurah - 681AD
I came across quite a few clips from this film on YouTube
The story of the founding of Bulgaria....and the resulting battle with Constantine IV...
The info to the right hand side of the clips include some script subtitle translations so you know what is going on...
Not exactly authentic costuming as far as I know...i'm not sure who is who at times, but interesting - especially as no CGI was used....all those warriors are real.......!
Clip 1
The following clips can be found in the Related/Show All Videos section..

The enemy is less likely to get wind of an advance of cavalry, if the orders for march were passed from mouth to mouth rather than announced by voice of herald, or public notice. Xenophon

Former "Eastern Block" epic movies can be amazing, especially re. the numbers of extras used. There are also a few Romanian ones about the Dacian wars (incl. one about Domitian, another during Trajan's reign) which are quite impressive (albeit the nationalist overtones can be a bit much at times). No CGI, just huge parts of the respective armies put into costumes...
Here is a link to a youtube video with a few shots from one of them (unfortunately, very short):

No matter what, CGI can never beat a real cast of thousands. Thanks Arthes.

I had included a link to a youtube clip from a Romanian Decebalus movie but now it's gone. Weird. Or is that against the rules? But the first post in this thread includes a link too. Just wondering...

For some reason, the page hadn't updated itself for me. Now I see all the other posts, too. Weird, though.

Just watching this again....and clip 3.....
hock: when you think that all those soldiers are REAL, not CGI.....imagine what it must have been like...!
I love the horse archers in clip 7, but those poor horses going down are real ... some of them must have been injured -
It seems there is an English dubbed version of the film available, but supposedly it ruins the effect... I must admit I prefer subtitles and hearing a rather more authentic language used....!
