A new article on 'Cold weather clothing' has just been uploaded to our website written by RAT member Crispvs.

As winter approaches, it may have some useful information to keep you warm in the inclement weather!

The article can be read here..

Salvete,

Caballo's excellent article on the "Manica" is also now available on the web site at :

Thanks for the kind words- and I learnt from Crispus this weekend that two further manicae (making four in total) were found at Carlisle which are yet to be fully examined and published.

All were cobbled together from existing damaged manicae- implying that manicae had been in use for quite a while and that they were very much an armour to be used rather than simply shown off.

I'll update the article when I have more info.

Cheers,

I believe they were ferric- but that is the extent of my info.......I'll ask Crispus who was at the Carlisle conference.

Tarbicus,

As I understand it the four manicae were all iron, and were assembed with a variety of rivets. Not all of the manicae which had been cannibalised to make them had been assembled with identical rivets and many different rivets of different shapes, sizes and compositions had been used to repair them and assemble them into the four manicae discovered. Apparently they were deposited at some time during the AD130s. The impression was that they had been repaired as much as was possible already and were now fit only for scrap metal.
The confusion over the number of manicae found probably stems from the fact that only one entire manica and half of one of the others were examined. I believe that this was partly because of the tricky nature of the preservation method which was used and partly because techniques will inevitably improve in the future so it is right to leave some for future examination with improved techniques.
Mike Bishop carried out much of the work on the manicae and it was hime who presented the paper on them at the conference. Therefore I would expect him to know much, much more than me.
