From Marc Anthonys XVII to Varus XVII
#1
Was just reading through http://www.livius.org/le-lh/legio/xvii.html and was wondering how plausible it could be that

the XVII at the time of the battle of teturborg forest , shared its history with Marc Anthonys XVII rather than being created by augustus.

any further reading links would be greatly appreciated.

Chance

Hi Chance,
As Jona says, it's possible, but the sources for this legion are so minimal, that it must always be speculation. IIRC the existence of a Legio XVII Classica in Antony's army is solely based on a coin in his famous legionary denarii series which mentions this legion. That is it. There is after that NO evidence for a legio XVII apart from the logical reasons Jona mentioned.
Greets!
