Pannonia - Seat of Government
#1
Hello,

I'm looking to find out what city/location would have been the seat of government in Pannonia under the Flavians, specifically Vespasian, in the early 70s CE. But I'd even take info for under Titus and/or Domitian (or earlier under Nero or Claudius).

I've found the name of several towns/fortresses and even the name of one governor under Domitan (Rantius Quirinalis). I just can't seem to locate the name of where that governor would have been based.

I've also found the "capitals" of Pannonia Superior and Inferior after the divsion in 103, but I would like the capital while Pannonia was one, united province.

Anyone have any idea?

Thanks,

It's Carnuntum.
(that's what I remembered but I don't have my books here at the moment as I'm on holiday so I took a quick look at a book called "Die Chronik Österreichs" by Ackert and Kleindel to back this up. there they say the capital and seat of the governor of Pannonia before the split was Carnuntum.)

I've already been there several times. It's a legionary base of Legio XV Apollinaris Mentioned first time by V.Paterculus if I remember correctly.
Close to it is a civil town including baths, amphitheater and other public buildings. It was a quite large town in the 2nd century and base for Marcus Aurelius operations against the Marcomanni as well as the place where Septimius Severus was proclaimed emperor and the place where Diocletianus tried to restore the Tetrarchy.

As said before there was a legionary base there, an auxiliary base for cavalry nearby and a 2nd Legionary base at Vindobona (modern Vienna) only few kilometres away.

The base was home of Legio XV Apollinaris, in the 60ies of the 1st century CE Legio X Gemina was stationed there while Apollinaris was in the east fighting first with Corbulo and then under Vespasian against the Jewish revolt End of the 1st beginning of 2nd Century Carnuntum was base of XIV Gemina which stayed there until the end.

( btw. X Gemina was stationed in the nearby base at Vindobona around 114)

You will find something under the webpage of the Archaeological Park Carnuntum (the site is also in english) Big Grin

The roman settlement is between the modern villages Petronell-Carnuntum (civilian city with the "heidentor" Heathen´s Gate nearby) and bad deutsch-altenburg (there is also the museum carnuntinum). since 1996 there is a "römerfest" every year in the civilian city Big Grin
