Guttmann Gladius Dimensions?
#1
Does anyone have the dimensions of the Guttmann gladius that was sold by Christie's in 2004?

Salve Matt,

The dimensions are as follows:

Blade length: 63.6cm
Locket: 14.5cm tall
The reproduction (made from a cast from the original) was 67.3cm in the scabbard.

Vale,

Celer.
Marcus Antonius Celer/Julian Dendy.

Much appreciated Julian, thanks!

That puts its width at about 40mm- near the middle of the 38-45mm range of a list of 6 blades presented I think by Peter Connolly

Julian.
Totally off-topic but, do you have any more pics of the Late Roman Intercisa IV ex-Guttmann helmets (Any news on its present whereabouts)?
Many thanks! Big Grin

Aitor
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

One interesting feature I now see clearly in the photo from Christie's is the marking on the blade:

> C VALERI PR
C VALERI PRI

The Century of Caius (Gaius) Valerius Primus, owner (?) Caius (Gaius) Valerius Primus himself? This is how I have understood such markings to be 'translated' on other objects- the century indicated by the symbol and the Centurio's name, followed by the soldier's name- so is this actually the Centurio's weapon?

Photo from Roma-Victrix website, enhanced contrast by yours truly:

Is that the gladius with the "Mail-opener" on the point?

Yes, Gauis this is the one with the "quadrifoil"tip. I have a forged blade blank that I was considering attemping this point on.

There was a discussion a while back that IIRC ended-up that the theory of the 'mail busting tip' was far-fetched and a whole lot less-likely than the rather simpler reinforcement because the point of a stabbing weapon that's only about 4.5mm thick is a weak point in the design...

I see! Sounds plausible, considering the methods of employment against fellow romans etc

Matt,

The Connolley article was the one about pila. The one about the sizes of actual swords was by David Hare (AKA 'Pompeiiswords').
