African Drill
#16
I'm interested.
Nullis in verba

I have not checked this forum frequently since 2013, but I hope that these old posts have some value. I now have a blog on books, swords, and the curious things humans do with them.

What's all the hubbub over a drill? What's next...a hammer and saw?

Hey, did you hear about the miracle that just happened last week on the construction site? A blind carpenter picked up his hammer and saw!

We learned this in English class:
"I see, said the blind man, and he picked up his hammer and saw".

Well that was sure a positive reaction!!

Ok, I will scan the abstract and have it available as a pdf. for those that want it.

I contacted a colleague of mine who was in that session.

Here's the basics:

Knaegi reconstructs the African drill as a three line formation with flanking calvary units and a dedicated rearguard. Basically the three line formation would engage and the trap would be "sprung" by sweeping lines of calvary, boxing the enemy in on three sides. I assume (though its not clear from the abstract) that the killing was committed by the calvary and the three line infantry formation was there to control and deflect the attack while the calvary mopped up.

The trick is doing it right of course, which suggests that the inclusion of rearguard was far from perfunctory. Knaegi suggests that the maneuver (or the failed use of it) was responsible for the Byzantines defeat in several battles. Most of Knaegi's points were on this last historical thesis and not on the actual reconstruction of the drill.

If he wins the Graduate Student competition this year it will likely be published next year in Byzantine Zeitschrift or comparable journal.

Quote:It sounds fascinating! How could you not be there? Smile Yes, I would like to see the abstract!

Because I was listening in to the art history session in another auditorium.

I would dearly have loved to be there, but (sigh) Military matters are only my hobby, while Art History is my job.
