Salve Valerius ~

We participated in a military timeline event called Marching Through History in the Los Angeles area where lots different reenactment groups come together to talk with the public and compete in different categories. This year the WWII folks included vintage airplanes buzzing (very low...10 meters!) mock battlefield with tanks etc. Reenactors of ancient periods including ourselves also showed up in force, and Leg IX won 2nd place best encampment. The highlight (for me) was getting 14 of us in full marching kit (with our new scuta) parading for public review. Leg VI was there too, encamped across from us and they posted a guard 24-hours a day. Yes, the poor bastards were standing alert all night ;-) ) Laudes to them for that.

Nice pictures.

Hib, your first photo brough back one or two memories for me:

As you can see, I didn't bother to use my sleeping bag that weekend. Instead, my tunic and cloak became the natural choice for my bedding. I was photographed sleeping here in the doorway of a reconstructed roundhouse.

Yes, I have done overnight watches too during my time in the Roman army. The gate house at the Lunt fort becomes considerably less interesting after you have been pacing up and down on it and looking out into the dead of night for a couple of hours waiting for the next party of soldiers to relieve you.
