Though I agree with most of your criticisms, I beg to differ regarding this outfit. The Menologion of Basil II (or perhaps it's his psalter) shows just such an outfit being worn by an upper-class Bulgarian - see http://www.geocities.com/egfroth1/Bulgarians .
