Hello people!
I recall seeing pictures on here, somewhere, which this armour brought to mind!
Does it remind anyone of something.....

I have been meaning to do this for a while ,as it has played on my mind for a while. A good example, perhaps, of Ottoman weaponry being influenced by Byzantium, or visa-versa?

"Krug" style armours were also used by the Mamluks of Egypt and in Iran in the late 15th century, so I doubt there is a Roman link. AFAIK late 14th century Persian miniature paintings also show armoured warriors with large discs over their chests, so I think the origins of this type of armour probably lie further east.

It was just that I recall seeing pictures of Byzantine emperors wit hsuch armour, and was facinated to see this armour which looks so similar!
You would think that the influences were widespread! Why would there be no link, as they were often in conflict with the very same people!

Can you remember where you saw the pics? I can't think of any examples I've ever seen.

I think it is entirely possible that some Byzantine warriors may have worn "kipchaq-style" helmets of this type. After all there were many steppe nomads serving as mercenaries in Constantinople's armies and i suppose it is possible that some of them may have had helmets of this type. Furthermore Roman "cavalry sports helmets" of the 1st-3rd centuries AD had similar face masks and even had a hinge in the middle of the forehead, I suppose it is conceivable (although unlikely) that this type of helmet was revived and updated in the Byzantine period.

Syrian and Persian refugees found their way to the Byzantine army at the time so the figure is not ahistorical.
