Greek helmet weights
#1
Khairete!

Someone was kind enough to post this link on the Bronze Age Center, Hermann Historica's auction of part of the Axel Guttmann collection.

http://www.hermann-historica.de/auktion ... at49_A.txt

The information for each piece includes its WEIGHT!

Corinthian helmets: 1343 g, 1570 g, 1017 g, 1982 g (though heavily encrusted), 951 g, 1067 g

Chalcidian helmets: 921 g, 791 g, 742 g, 694 g, 800 g

Illyrian helmets: 912 g, 955 g

Pilos helmet: 893 g

FASCINATING stuff! Should put a few arguments to rest, though no doubt it will cause a few more.

Enjoy!

Once was posted by me and Tarby, but because all of them was on Ebay site, the moderators delet it, long ago.

Good to see it back Matt! Big Grin

Remarks by Philip on the Athenian Leaders:
Philip said that the Athenians were like the bust of Hermes: all mouth and dick.

The last one is "attic" not "chakidic".
The weight of the Corinthians aproxiamate the weight of the M-1942 U.S. army helmet while the other approximate the weight of the "chech" design that was used by the Italian, Greek, Polish and Belgian armies at WW2.
Kind regards

Here's a bronze helmet from a Late Bronze Age (ca. 1400 BC) grave near Knossos, Crete. The holes round the edge indicate that it was originally lined with leather or felt.
