phrygian hat
#1
Salvete,

Can someone tell me how a phrygian hat can be constructed? I'd like to make one.

Thanks in advance,
Vale,

Thanks Robert!

So this one should work for a cap like the ones shown in example 1 and 2 in the website I guess? I don't like the cap with the cheekflaps as much Smile

I made one from blanket scraps (left over from making a paenula) and like the ep06_105 version, but I took the front more straight up. I guess there were probably dozens of variants. Adding more to the front (where the fabric is folded, in my case) makes the forward tipping point more pronounced.

It's not a big sewing project, but it sure feels nice on a cool morning.

One was found in Dura Europos and it was made of "Filz" (I do not know the correct term in English, sorry) and it was light red.

And always remember waht it represents ;-) )

It's felt, Susanna
About the Phrygian cap used as an arming cap and, concretely, the cap recovered at Dura, pleas, have a look at this thread:

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

Scythian style, isn't it, if this is the same one?

Did you make that sketch?

I did Aitor. It's being made by someone for me (minus the felt inner, and hence the measurements based on my head), and she may be up for making more. I also have a Phrygian cap by her, but the stitching needs to be at the back if you want to wear it as an arming cap. I posted it in Marketplace:

I cannot grasp why the stitching should be neccessarily at the back... :?
Where is it at the Dura cap :?:
Thanks,

Aitor

When I got the Phrygian cap, which has the stitching down the front, I tried it on as an arming cap and found it's actually pretty painful as the front of the helmet bowl can press it into your forehead. Believe me, it's not at all comfortable, and can leave quite an 'impression'. Cry
