Centuriones

I have never heard of any evidence to say for sure that there actually was an officer in command of the cohort. Of course, it should be remembered here that there are others far better informed than me. It makes sense to us that there should be a cohort commander, but until evidence shows up I think it must remain an assumption.

To add to the evidence from Inchtuthil, the barrack blocks at Caerleon feature very extensive quarters for the centuriones with many rooms in each. Only four of the barracks are exposed to view but if I recall the overall plan correctly, it seems as if the other barracks had the same type of quarters for the centuriones.

However, I wonder whether the visual difference between the quarters of different ranks of centurio might have been not so much in terms of size but in terms of richness of decoration. Perhaps the difference between plain plastered walls versus elaborate frescos and rich hangings.

When you look at the ground plan in the link quoted above you'll see that it's similar to that of Inchtuthil. The Normal barrack blocks have centurion's quarter attached. One group located next to the headquarter building - the traditional position for the 1st cohort - is larger and has no centurion's quarters. Alongside it three houses have been excavated, the remaining space leaving room for just two more.

Thanks for pointing that out Rob. Either I had not noticed the first cohort barracks and houses or I had forgotten them.
