Full Circle Panuela ?
Big Grin

It's from 'The Last Hero' by G.K.Chesterton:

The wind blew out from Bergen from the dawning to the day,
There was a wreck of trees and fall of towers a score of miles away,
And drifted like a livid leaf I go before its tide,
Spewed out of house and stable, beggared of flag and bride.
The heavens are bowed about my head, shouting like seraph wars,
With rains that might put out the sun and clean the sky of stars,
Rains like the fall of ruined seas from secret worlds above,
The roaring of the rains of God none but the lonely love.
Feast in my hall, O foeman, and eat and drink and drain,
You never loved the sun in heaven as I have loved the rain.

Over-blown and over-fond of alliteration as it is, there a few good phrases for the re-enactor :-) )

Quote:Mine is based on a half circle design, closed down the front, with a hood.

Hi John :-)

I wonder if the closed front is characteristic of the birrus britannicus? Our weather certainly seems to warrant draught-proofing! Confusedhock:

So, was the 'late' paenula no different from the 'early'?

I don't know the answer to how different it was. I suspect there were many different styles and types. My point is you can't really ascertain the length by pictorial evidence alone. It is such a versatile garment, not unlike some Scandinavian cloaks.

I know what you mean. Big Grin The more I look, the more I see a seam down the front just like your half circle paenula, despite the symmetrical profile which I took to imply a single piece, like an ecclesiastical chasuble.

I suppose it could still be a rectangular poncho with rounded corners with a slit up the front, but I don't know how it would drape.

The RMC3 reconstruction has clavi down the front - my guess would be they run down the back as well :?

For this coming weekend, on the north Yorkshire Moors, I would make a wet suit not a cloak......
