If you have the possibility of obtaining the book: Osprey- Warrior 15.
Late Roman cavalryman; AD 236-565.
This book shows a lot of shields from Notitia Dignitatum.
Is a great book,
If I could have helped you?

Round and smaller than the infantry one... maybe 60 or 70 cm?

I'd say around 70 cm, judging from the Thorsberg smaller shield boards... :?

the measures Junkelmann gives for the latest Roman shields in "Reiter Roms II" are from Dura Europos early 3rd century with 107 and 118cm hight and with of 92 and 97 cm.
Looking at the pics in the book taken from the Arch of Galerius and the Arch of Constantine I'd say the shields look nearly round (not completely but much more than earlier ones)

I'm at the moment making 4 round small shields for kids to use. They will be made from plywood and have rawhide rims, etc. like real ones, but with the exception of rubber umbos to prevent injuries. :?
