Lorica Squamata
#1
Hello,
Could someone please explain to me the different types of lorica squamata that were used by the Roman army during the 4th century? I'm having a heck of a time finding information.

Were they always sewed to a linen backing? Could the scales be sewed together with leather and then worn over a linen underarmour?

Salve pfotim,
if you need informations about late roman squamata you should take a look into the Dura Europos report Nr. 7.
There you find the informations about squamata.
Elsewhere you will mostly find seperated squares of quite different forms and types. So its hard to find differences between.

It seems that the squamata in first century was rebuild like the hamata with a humilita on the shoulders and at least at the ending 1st, but in fact in the 2nd century had a plate to close on the breast, which looked great.

The bow of the emperor Galerius shows us really nice squamatae without that, but with a round around the neck, just like Robert has his own (VortigernStudies here in Forum).

Other examples and those of the enemies shown in several places just look like a shirt.

I hope this helped you already.

Fact is, you shouldnt take to big squares. the form can variate.
