EDIT:

I found the thread on making the Gladius. I'll re-direct my question to that thread.

Heres mine, I just finished it. I do want to add a bit more to the scabbard. It took me about 2 months with research and my youngest daughters surgury and other "pop-ups". I was pretty happy with it, all done by me, by hand. Looks kinda like a polished turd next to the really nice ones previously posted!!

But I bet your daughters never did this to your hunting hound!!

What's the pommel made of on that last one? It looks like it's silvered.

Pommel is just maple that I went over with Tru-Oil, which is a linseed based gunstock oil. It gives it a shine and a darker color. As well as protection from moisture.

Looks like a good functional sword. The only thing I'd change is the brass plate on the guard. It should be inset in the guard.

I always imagined little dogs need plenty of protection from moisture. You need to watch out if you're covering it in gun oil, though

Hummmmmmm... puts a whole new twist on the phrase "Polishing one's sword" now doesn't it???

Seriously though... Wes, that sword does look rather sweet.... did you make it yourself, do you have a few sharper photos of it?

I misunderstood the jest by Tarbicus.....DUH! Shes a good Beagle, not sure how bad the girls have her spoiled yet.

I got the blade of the sword from a buddy, did the rest in what spare time I can muster.

Is the Brass plate smaller than the diameter of the guard?? Then inset?? I guess I goofed!!

Yes, this is the way most of the originals were constructed. But there could be some out there were there was no brass plate or the plate wasn't inset.

On the Legio XX website you can read this:

Quote:The gladius hilt was made of wood, bone, or ivory, and a thin brass plate was usually set into the bottom of the guard (though it could simply be set flat against the guard, or be lacking altogether).

But I don't know on what originals Matthew Amt based himself to say this.

Your dog does look a little humiliated Smile

I'd planned to re-do my sword (if it ever gets here) the same way. With the brass plate I mean.
