RTW patches, realism mod
#1
Didn't see these mentioned, but has anyone installed the 1.2 patch or the realism mods? Curious what they thought of them and what bugs/problems cropped up and might be avoided.
Legio XX
I have the latest realism mod. When you finish your turn...it takes forever for the the CPU turns to cycle before its your turn again. Maybe its because they extended the map partway into India? I don't know why...for me it takes fun out of the gameplay...i don't like waiting 3 minutes in between turns. 1.2? Haven't installed it since realism mod won't work properly with it. I'm going to wait for the 5.2 realism mod which will be a build off the 1.2 patch.

I have the 5.1 Rome Total Realism mod installed and am also waiting for 5.2 before I install the new patch. I haven't noticed any slow down at all between turns on the campaign game though Valmar, so maybe its a technical issue with your PC specs.

I find the Realism mod great and have been using it since about Version 2.0. The 'Europa Barbarorum' mod looks like it could be even better, but there is no indication of when I will be released.

I played the unmodded 'vanilla' game at a mate's place the other week and couldn't believe how silly it seemed by comparison.

Is there finally a mod, where they made the gladii longer? I can't stand those little knives anymore...

.... and the townwalls, what about them?

Edited by: Hadrianus at: 2/27/05 12:24 am

Wish they'd make a patch that would add Late Romans.

They did this on the history channel's "Decisive Battles" for the "Adrianople" episode.

There is a mod project called 'Fall of Rome'. I'm not sure how far they have got with it yet though. They have a discussion thread on Total War Centre and their main board can be found at the Strategic Command Centre.

Thank you for the info, Flavius .

I didn't know that, although I do pop into the discussion board from time to time. Their members are extremely active compared to RAT.
There seem to be some guys who basically LIVE on the Total War Center forums (when they aren't playing RTW).

I've been playing the latest version of RTW: Total Realism. It seems fine, though I haven't used the 1.2 Patch's battle editor yet. I'll try that this weekend.

I started my campaign again and am finding it a lot harder than the 'vanilla' RTW. I'm having to use spies, assassins and diplomacy a lot more, rather than just building armies and attacking in all directions. I tried that and got crushed between an alliance of Brennus' Gauls and Phyrrus' Greeks attacking me from two sides.

This time around I have been more careful of who I make my enemy and who I keep as friends. I've just snuffed out the last of Phyrrus' outposts in Italy, am marching north to drive the Gauls from the Po valley and building up my fleets in preparation for the Punic War that I feel is not far away ...

Meanwhile, in my custom tactical battles, I'm learning how best to use Roman units against Parthian/Sarmatian horse armies. And I've decided I rather like the Iberian armies.

Yeah. At any given time there's at least twenty guys logged on (not including the number of anonymus 'guests').

I'm not familiar with "mods". Are they like home-made patches you can download ? Or are they instructions for modifying the game ?
Mods are programs you download that change the game, sometimes adding a whole new game in, such as Counterstrike for Half-Life.

BTW, anyone know of a patch to make the Roman soldiers helmets look authentic instead of the Darth Vader looking ones?

Edited by: ThracianAuxillia at: 3/5/05 8:12 am

They're pretty good. If only someone can remember where the mod for changing the size of the gladii is, and find a way to dump the manica?

Edited by: Tarbicus at: 3/7/05 3:36 pm

Allo Theodosius,
It's from the same link posted before my message by Hadrianus. Click the jpg links, some nice stuff. In fact, browsing the previous and later pages of that forum is pretty interesting.
Cheers.

I think the picture Hadrianus posted is of a 'skin' rather than a 'mod'. A mod changes a number of aspects of the game - the map, the play balance, names of units and their appearance. A skin simply changes a single unit's appearance.
