Thunderbolt shield-ornament
#1
On p.410 of J.Kromayer and G.Veith, Heerwesen und Kriegführung der Griechen und Römer, Munich, (1928) there is a reference to: a thunderbolt shaped brass-strip (blitzförmigen Blechstreifen) found at Alesia which may have served as decoration as well as reinforcement (Zierrat wie zur Versteifung) for a legionary scutum. P.Couissin, Les armes romaines. Essai sur les origines et l’évolution des armes individuelles du légionnaire romain, Paris (1926) p.315 is cited as a source, but I can find no mention of it in Couissin, or elsewhere. Does anyone know anything about this find?[/u]
