4th century tunics - Tomis, Rumania
#1
Leading on from the talk about 3rd century tunics, what do people think of this scene from the hypogeum at Tomis (Rumania), which is 4th century? The tunics look very drapped.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'drapped'?

Draped... loose fitting and flowing? perhaps unbelted.

It also looks like they have a 'poncho' type of over garment on top of the tunicae??? :?

I see what you mean, some of the sleeves look draped rather than fitted, almost like a late ('gothic'?) paenula with segmenta.

The fed up looking chap third from the right seems to have a simple neckline & sleeves, as does the supine fellow on his right, whereas the others may have a standard tunic under their garment. Smile

It is a colobium. Still worn by some catholic priests today. Was very "in" in the 4th century.

Somehow it looks as if they have draped (indeed!) an extra tunic over their shoulders?

A loose sleeved garment or cloak with a "pallium" at the shoulders & neck ?

Are these religeous men ... clergy ?
