Ave Mithras,
It's hardly a first for movie history : Constantine and the Cross (DVD) (1962) Starring American actor Cornel Wilde and the rest of the Italian cast was dubbed over in English.
It actually explained the framework of the tetriarchy quite well (a modern director would shirk at attemping this and try to simplify it, I suspect) and featured all the original tetriarchs and some of their successors/usurpers. The military costumes were hopelessly anachronistic (segs, gallics, etc.) although Constantine's legionaires had round shields and white tunics. And some of the civilian garb (tunics) looked fairly accurate : long, tight sleeves, clavii, and orbiculi.
Diocletian (right) and Maximius
Maxentius wearing the most accurate tunic in the whole movie
Milvian Bridge (shouldn't be wooden, but nice bridge)
The DVD's worth owning despite being a highly flawed movie (and copy), IMO. If you like, I can post more stills from the movie.

Quote:Yes, next week - Constantine - hurray! That must be a first in TV/movie history. At last. Looks good, with mail and chi-rhos and oval shields and Intercisa style helmets, except for the curly haired actor they
have got to play him (have they not seen the coins or the York head?). I hear its a very unsympathetic view of the emperor.
I'm all for that.
