ANYONE INTERESTED IN FUNFAIRS & ROLLERCOASTERS?
#1
This may be of interest to any of you who are fans/enthusiasts of funfairs & rollercoasters:
As archaeologists we are deeply concerned about current events in our seaside town, with potential threats to our heritage. In recent months the town has seen the loss of several listed buildings, without any apparent consultation with statutory bodies. In the last 2 weeks we have now seen the closure of the Southport Pleasureland Funfair, which had been bought out in recent years by its business opposition in Blackpool. Plans were reported of removal of prestige rides to Blackpool, but it was hoped that some of the site could be retained if bought by another operator.

In the last few days the old wooden rollercoaster, which is over 75 years old and one of only a few surviving rollercoasters of its type, began to be dismantled. It seems that this may be being done in haste to prevent any measures to apply for listed status.
We were further dismayed to hear that English Heritage have been denied access to the site to record the structure before it is destroyed.
In addition, it has now been discovered that the site is one of only a few habitats of an endangered species, the Great Crested Newt, so we also have important environmental and wildlife issues here.

Although some damage has been done, it can still be repaired – IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO STOP THIS.

There is a public protest and TV coverage planned for tonight 5.45pm GMT

For further background information I include a link to a local news website which has been monitoring and campaigning against the destruction:
http://www.southport.gb.com/

If any of you would like to help by registering your protests against this destruction, you could send a snotty letter to the main culprit:
Amanda Thompson Managing Director of Pleasure Beach, Blackpool email : [email protected]

Or, I would suggest that possibly the Department for Culture, Media and Sport is bombarded with messages decrying what is happening at Pleasureland and the damage caused to the historic Cyclone coaster and asking that spotlisting be considered, in the light of the very real threat now to this part of our country's heritage, not to mention the loss of jobs and damage to tourism and the local economy.

A similar thing happened in my seaside town (Felixstowe). They demolished the wooden rollercoaster, a 1920's art deco hotel and now the pier is being left to rust and rot.

It is shameful to see.

This is a worldwide phenomenon, here in the US the same thing is occurring , beautiful old buildings or historic structures get destroyed daily to put up luxury condos or a new mini mart ... It is truly disgraceful that we are losing our past day by day...

Well last nights protest wenta head.
One of the protestors attemted to photograph over the high wall by using a hydraulic "cherrypicker" vehicle, but the manager of the site got into the vehicle and started hitting the buttons so the attempt was stopped as too dangerous to continue.
English Heritage have tried to get in twice but been refused. They say they are trying to fasttrack the listing process but need to see the level of current damage - hence the cherrypicker attempt.
The organisers of the protest are this lunchtime attempting a low level flight in a small plane to try to photo from above.
The council could put in a temporary 6 month stay to allow English Heritage time to list, but so far have done nothing.
Anyone who feels so inclined, feel free to email your thoughts to any of the contacts listed above - council, government (DCMS), or Pleasurebeach company.

Also, now it seems the site is home to some highly endangered species: Great Crested Newts & Natterjack Toads, so protestors are attempting to get support from English Nature to protect it that way too.

Ah well, keeps us from boredom of endless TV repeats.
Someone bake us a cake with a file in it....

Well, at least you now know for sure that they have something to hide. I'll send my emails later today. I have fond memories of Southport as a kid and I'm sick of businesses getting away with this kind of thing. The councillors sound like they need a real threat to their re-elections.

Let us know how the flyover went.

That is one of the tactics people like this love to use , ie; destroy or severely damage the historic site so by the time things get organized there's nothing to save and it's truly disgraceful...

It's still there but shrinking fast.
They stopped demoition briefly while the TV crew were there, but announced on radio that will continue till its gone!
English Heritage couldnt get in so took the pragmatic approach & just let the application to list it fail.
Local Council are still trying to say its not being demolished, just another old structure nearby, but aerial photos prove otherwise.
The only bit gone at the moment is a part replaced following a fire in the 1970's (the bit Eng Heritage say makes it not authentic) which was a rebuild along original plans.
Another protest on Sunday, but it looks like it may be gone before that.
If anyone has nothing better to do, email some of the names above, or if you know anyone with clout, (or even with the dosh to buy the park) contact them too.
Otherwise, another one bites the dust.
