Roman Civil War in York (UK Times today
#1
Well, fighting between Roman units is (I suppose) pretty authentic. Explains all the punched ownership names on helmets, spears, swords etc......

(And the paper version of the Times comes with a photo as well)
From the Times today:-

How two Roman soldiers 'did battle' in bath house
By Andrew Norfolk

The quiet of a museum was shattered when the leaders of rival re-enactment groups clashed over the ownership of prized artefacts

"I firstly awaited an explanation of the 'York's headless corpses' mystery"
Based on the Times article, it looks like the headless corpses "borrowed" someone else's kit!! Big Grin

Sadly, this unseemly incident and associated behaviour has disturbed the local re-enactment community but could not be construed as a grudge between re-enactment 'units', but a personal financial grudge over the Museum which has escalated out of control.

For those who don't know him, Mr Mulhearn is one of the principle organisers of the York Roman Festival, which has unfortunately made this issue difficult to avoid for local re-enactors.

Needless to say, the sorry facts of the matter are poorly represented but it hardly constitutes an advertisment for re-enactment in the local, and now national, press.

Someone pretends to be a Roman soldier but then gets scared when someone gives him a dirty look and holds a helmet up in the air? And the girl fell to the ground and got stared at? She thought she was going to die? Are you kidding me? There's enough stuff to be worried about without having to make things up. Idea

P.S. Good on her for defending her father, especially when she was scared. I just feel that she is over dramatizing it so she can get more money out of teh court system.

To be fair, the guy was found innocent. If the jury decided he did nothing of the sort, when even the other two people, father and daughter, said he did, then we need to give him his due. We don't have transcripts of the trial.

I'm sure this would not have even shown up on the Press radar if it didn't involve sharp pointy things and a helmet.

In my previous experience....when two re enactors fall out...it's generally grab their swords and everybody grabs them to stop it...from behind their shields of course...
One of the reasons some people go into re enactment, is simply their love of fighting with various pointy weapons or muskets and guns from different eras that attract them. Some 'enlist' because they are drawn to a certain era or culture..and all get annoyed or upset at one time or another and have various ways of reacting to situations that upset our feelings or peace of mind...Romans simply march in and demand.....'I come', 'I see', 'It's mine'.....'hand it over'....lol
Was it before or after this I posted that article about somewhere being needed to store all the roman gear that was kept at the Bath...
It says in this article with pictures of the rivals, somebody was dressed as a gladiator...unless they mean his name being Maximus... I had seen him around the beginning of December and he had mentioned not being at the Bath any longer.. Roman bat(h)tle

Well, the man is wearing leather armor - guilty of all charges! Big Grin
But seriously, the jury apparently found the accounts of the curator and his daughter unbelievable. I also did not read about any charges of thefth, so apparently the sword that the ex-curator took was indeed his?

The big problem with this stuff in the press is the view taken by the general public, to all of us there is a certain amount of humor in the story, however to the public this stuff which includes "pointy things" is potentially a dangerous situation and must therefore be, dare I say it "CONTROLLED" It is lucky for us as re-enactors that the man wasn't found guilty, if he had, the argument of the health and safety lobby would be further control on our hobby. This as I am sure all would agree would be a further pain in the neck.
