Aux. Leg. and Praet. How diffrent where they really!?

Quote:citizens ... could move to an auxiliary unit in a specialist position (centurion, trainers etc)
It was my impression that auxiliary centurions were generally peregrini, too.

But I suppose the Valerius Vitalis who seems to have been a centurion of cohors I Frisiavonum (RIB 279) must have been a citizen, and we may well imagine (but not prove Smile ) that he was promoted from the ranks of a legion.

No doubt, you have other examples, Mike?

Quote:IIRC, a legionary was executed on the spot by a legate for having a differently shaped shield and therefore putting his comrades lives in danger.

Are you thinking of the episode from around 100 BC where the legatus punishes a man for having a shield which was too large? Can't quite come up with the general's name, right on the tip of my brain... But I don't think the soldier was executed.

Good point on the citizenship being a factor in which units you could transfer to, Mr. Galer, I was writing to quickly to consider that!
