NEWSTEAD VERSION LORICAS...any updates?(formerly Corbridge)
#1
Hello All

My name is Drew Young. I am an armourer, costumer and profession speaker. I take my projects very seriously, and wish to make the final piece as accurate as possible.

I am well versed in Medieval armour, and well familiar with Greco-Roman 'appearences' in so far as I know when I lorica was used or what the Dendra panoply is, etc. However both Medieval and Ancient periods, while obviously connected, contain so much information its daunting ...but I am and always have been fascinated by Roman military history.

So, here is my first project and question to you all....

I am intersted in making a late 2nd century legionary.

Ive read various accounts that the H Russel Robinson Newstead lorica info is now a bit out of date due to newer studies.... Can soneone suggest some studies I might consult before constructing this harness? (Im not up to date on new Roman armor publications)

Im sure Ill have more questions as I go...its my first shot at Roman armor... and while it looks easier than a 15th century harness.....Im not going to underestimate the project as looks can be decieving!

Much obliged Gents!

Drew

There's this book/bible about the lorica segmentata:
link from old RAT

There's these threads:
link from old RAT

And there are these sites:
[url:ibyscj81]http://www.legionxxiv.org/
[url:ibyscj81]http://www.larp.com/legioxx/lorica.html

And they're just for segmentata, not hamata.

There are far more many threads containing info, which can be searched for using keywords: lorica segmentata hamata (Search All Words, initially).

Any help?

Oh yes, and the real thing:

Ave, Drew!

You found us. If you're talking late second century, Newstead is what you want, not Corbridge.

And the Legio VI Victrix guys are the ones to consult, since they've made several and have the best information. I started on one years ago, but haven't finished it yet.

Have fun! Vale,
