Miniatures Question
#1
I was wondering if any of you collect historical miniatures, or know someone who do? You see, I am looking to start with Warhammer Historical, but I seem to have trouble finding good miniatures. It should be noted that I play Warhammer 40'000, and I have "grown up" with GW's excellent miniatures.

So, can anyone please help?

Of the wargames persuasion? I know there are several members who game. Have you checked out Jeroen's list in http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?t=4202 ?
What scale are you thinking about?

I did indeed look at the list.

I was thinking 25and 28, thouh 10mm will also work.

Thanks!

My favourite 15mm figures are Corvus Belli:

They have stockists in the US, UK, throughout Europe...and the figures are very good quality.

15mm means that you still get figures with plenty of detail, but can have larger scale actions....

If you have a hunt around this messageboard, you should find plenty of threads about different scales of Ancient Miniatures:

Hope that helps!

----- I just saw that you talk about Warhammer 40k. In that case you must be used to larger figures, about 25mm-28mm. In that case, check this link out:

Look up manufacturers here:

and finally Big Grin

It's worth doing plenty of research because there are lots and lots and lots of companies out there, and it really will pay dividends. Good Luck!

If you want large grousp of 25mm (27MM) figures, OLD GLORY figures are pretty good. You get them in bags of 10 cavalry or 30 infantry the last time I checked, but the command groups have a different number,......

You'de go a long way to better A and A Miniatures and The Foundry. Gripping Beast have 3 good Roman ranges in this scale, too, with Arthurians and Sassanids to boot!

I personally use HaT 1/72 (23mm) Republican Romans in my WAB army. They're cheap and have pretty good detail for small, plastic models. If you're going to buy 1/72 scale minis, check out [url:1otn3g67]http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com[/url].

I play with other 1/72 scale gamers. If you're getting into WAB 1/72, it is best to get others to start with you. Having 28mm Greeks tower over your 23mm Romans doesn't look very good.

If you're going with larger minis, I don't have the slightest clue. I don't like them that much, if only for the price.

Back in the late 90's I used to paint a lot of Warhammer /Citadel miniatures. I just wish I had the time to do more historical model painting these days!

Thanks Jasper!

I haven't painted miniatures for a few years now. I have some Andrea figures in 70mm scale still lounging in their boxes! I must get around to doing them!

Gripping Beast also makes a decent set of Romans.

25-28 mm.

http://www.grippingbeast.com/shop.php?CatID=143

They are nice minatures with decent detail. You can get them in the US from Old Glory 15's. $13 for a bag of 10 infantry. . . before discounts of up to 40%. . .

I think foundry looks a lot better but you pay a lot more and some of their better looking Romans do not come with pila, nor does the company even sell them so it is a big headache to fully model them (not to mention the expense)

Hope this helps.

Hi, I play Warhammer Ancient Battles and have (in various stages of completion) a Polybian Roman, Early Imperial Roman, Late Imperial Roman, Macedonian pike, the beginnings of a late Achaemnid Persian army, a Han Chinese army, and such. I play in 25/28mm using these rules and if you're familiar with 40K then you'll find that WAB is similar and familiar.

The miniatures everyone has mentioned are all quite good. 1st Corps has a good set of Romans as well and Newline Designs' figures are also nice. There are a lot of companies doing Romans in 25/28. I recommend Old Glory as a 'cheap and cheerful' way of bulking up your rank and file figures and using, perhaps, Foundry figures as command officers if you must. That said, my Early Imperial Roman army is a hodge podge of miniatures from a variety of manufacturers.

If you wanted to do 10mm or 6mm, then I recommend Baccus or Heroics & Ros for 6mm with Magister Militum or Pendraken for 10mm Romans. I play Warmaster Ancients using 6mm figures.

It also all depends on the period you want to play. As mentioned, A&A Miniatures make gorgeous Middle Imperial Romans (Severan or Aurelianic) but not helpful if you want an Early Imperial or Republican army. That said, I'm already plotting my purchase of A&A MIR for a new army.
