I was wondering if anyone has seen the HBO's series called "Rome" (season 1)? If so, did you see any gladiator helmets and if they did have helmets, were any of them odd, or did the helmets match or nearly match to any of rome's regional enemies such as thracians, gauls, etc. Thankyou, michiann

I´m no specialists on Gladiatorial headgear but I would say that along with some "typical" helmets, others were rather new to me. Not that they might have not existed but they were rather odd.

My curiousity got the best of me, so I decided to purchase the "Rome" dvd (season 1). There were 2 helmets that I never saw before and they seem to be made of leather. One had small spikes on it and the other had a mouth protector; in both cases there were no visors. The only question here is, were these factually used in ancient times or are they just derived from the imagination of the filmmaker? michiann

Some of your words i didnt understood (my english is to bad), but to bring it on point:
The gladiatorscenes in Rome, part 11 are the worst that i ve seen after the series empire (same year), just compareable to the original film of Gladiator, in german "Der Untergang des römischen Reiches"....
Neither the equipment, nor the scene itself were usable.
It start with the method. A criminal should brought to dead, and it looked like they stared to turn it into a real fight... that wasnt the sense of execution...
and the cruel big scarface used a weapon i ve never seen outside fantasyfilms.
I ve saw saracene weapons, medieval ones and so on...it was desaster pure.
