Praetorians demo available
#16
Poster is the best word I could come up with. You know that poster thing with descriptions of all the units? Anyways, does anyone have any tips of beating the "Everlasting Frontier" mission? I believe its mission 4. I have resistwed the Barbarian assault but everytime I try to take their village, I get wasted. I thought up a new stategy I'm going to try but any help would be good (cheaper than buying the Prima stategy guide).
In Hoc Signo Vinces

Havent played it in about a week so not sure if i did it if so I just massed more troops and sat back till I had enough and broke it into 3 seperate "wings" The first to engage the second to flank and the 3rd to push through to the town, ah also siege engines. will have to take a look and see if its the same scenario, if not I'll replay it and let you know- johnn

Nevermind! After a week of playing and probably no less than 20 attempts at an invasion of Mainz, I finnally did it! It took two assaults. The first was an assault from three sides, two of the forces mainly for destraction while the third force (massive cavalry) came in and destroyed the garrison. Although I failed to end the mission here, I had greatly weakened the barbarian force (mostly bowmen which had slaughtered me on many past tries). I saved the game and it took about 3 more tries to get the secondary assault to be successful. The winning combination was 4 legionaries, 4 aux. infantry, 2 aux. archers, and 1 cavalry unit. If the 9th mission was this hard (on easy level!), how tough is the next gonna be? Sigh......
In Hoc Signo Vinces
Edited by: Flavius Valerius Constantinus at: 7/16/03 8:57 pm

While its nice ( not easing up on you ) each level up is continually harder. I am still in easy mode but couldnt tell that any more by playing I like it though. Honestly its challenging if somewhat daunting but definitly feels great when you complete each of these tougher levels- johnn

I hear the only difference between difficulty levels is the number of enemy forces and the flow of enemy reinforcements. I was really suprised how tough that level was because of the easiness of all the levels before it. It was the first that I had to implement serious strategy in. I felt great after finally beating that level. I havn't played any more since then, I was gone all day at the 2003 Dayton Air Show. Praetorians is an awesome game, I suggest it to all. The thing I like about it the most is the game's focus on combat. Most of the RTS games require you to build forts and other distractions that really cut down on the fun.
In Hoc Signo Vinces

I finally finished downloading the demo today and I played it.

Well, I must be missing something because I find the demo incredibly silly - when compared to say M:TW.

This demo just confirmed for me once again why I loathe the RTS genre - it's a friken' click fest and little else!

Oh well, will have to wait until R:TW to get a real dose of quality Ancients gaming on the PC.
I love Praeotrians, the acuracy and all is great. The clicking is much but thats how all RTS is. If you buy the game you will see it has some more dimensions. I like the fact you don't have to build tech trees and crap. Thats what I fear about games like Rome Total War, AOE, and Rise of Nations. I guess there's an RTS for everyone.
In Hoc Signo Vinces

I find Praetorians grows on you. I am now starting to discover that tactics do make a difference and it is becoming an interesting game to play.
Greets
New online strategy guide for Praetorians. Free alternative to the Prima Strategy guide. Provides multiple approaches to each mission.
In Hoc Signo Vinces

I'm with Barkhorn on this one. I think the game was a RELATIVELY fresh breath into the rapidly decaying RTS genre, but it was not enough.
The game is conducted via the slavish Warcraft3-blueprint: Follow the events that take place, and win the battle(s) in each respective mission. Having no ability to devise strategic decisions, only some tactical decisions (poorly at that).
When you have completed the game, the replayability is not up to par with M:TW, not by a longshot. I expect the same replayability from R:TW, except even better - due to the units being less generic between the factions - and the manner in which the strategic map works.
I also think Imperium looks and sounds quite promising. I know it's still a WIP, but it wouldn't hurt to spiff up the graphics on the windows'y strategic map
But if the gameplay is good enough, I won't care really.

There was a game about Roman conquest in 1991 called "Centurion: Defender of Rome." Aside from some silly arcade-aspects, it's very very good FOR ITS TIME.
It is a "multi level strategy game". Which means it's divided into turnbased strategy and realtime battles.
I think strategy plays a big role in the game. At first you don't realize it but as the campaing goes on, strategy is CRUCIAL!
In Hoc Signo Vinces

Sorry - spiffing up the artwork requires artists, and that is something we're not likely to have until I've signed the game up with a publisher. Even then, the game is hardly likely to strain your graphics card.
Well if you ever feel like doing a lot of artwork for royalties (and not likely to be very much, at that -- how much is a historical turn-based strategy game likely to sell, after all), you are welcome to contact me.
