traveling with an ID-card

this a question from a friend of mine:

she (Dutch) wants to fly to the UK with an ID-card instead of a pasport. Is this possible?

Greetings,
I didnt know ID cards could be used.....why do us Brits need a Passport then.....and they are even talking about us showing them on the way out as well as on the way in....?

Because we've had numpties like Blunkett and Clarke as Home Office ministers? :wink:

Actually, I think we can use them in Europe. We also used to be able to use just our driving licenses for places like the Caymans, but I dare say that's been changed of late.
