Battle of Sentinum, 295 or 294?
#1
It is always said and written that the Battle of Sentinum took place in 295. However, the consular year back then started on the first of July, which makes it possible that the battle took place in the second half of 295 or the first half of 294. During the battle, consul Decius Mus died. There was no consul suffectus. This suggest that the battle took place shortly before the end of the consular year, i.e., in 294. Am I wrong? Have I ignored something?

Hi Jona,
Have you looked at Cornell's The Beginnings of Rome 360-62? He points to an extraordinary list of special commands and prorogations, and "that there was a great deal of confusion in the tradition about the distribution of consular commands in the Samnite Wars, and that many different versions proliferated in the late Republic." That might make it difficult to date it by consular appointments perhaps?
He also uses Duris of Samos (FGrHist 76 F.56). Maybe there's an alternative way to date the battle in that source?
Greets!
