CAVE CANEM - my new house shield (Primitivus alert)

Avete omnes,

after some time I finally painted my new house shield with an ironic warning of our little shepherd dog "Holly" (ironic because she is very lovely and I wonder if she would really attack a housebreaker or friendly bring him the house-keys :?



May-be that our CoRat'er Primitivus might recognize the motif. :wink:

To the original from Pompeii I added the famous warning from another Pompeian mosaic, I think both are well-known to most of You:



As I regrettably never learned Latin at school , so my question to the specialists in our forum is, what could I still add in Latin in order to say: "Here Holly is watching"? "Hic Holly speculas" or "Hic Holly vigilas" or "..."?

thank You very much, Rob and Gioi (I sent You both PM's).

As one cannot travel back in time and because I failed to reanect up to now, I always try to make my home a little bit more mediterranean. And the reproduction of the fine Pompeian mosaic is only a little step in this intention.

It is nice and helpful (!) to be encouraged by others with the same interest. Thank You all so much for that.

How long did it take you? what are your tesserae made of?

Salve Travis,

it took me only some hours in several evenings when looking TV. The base is an old terracotta tile. The motif is only painted with exterior house paints.

To achieve that similarity with the original, perform the following steps:

1. find Your motif in the Internet, print it and look for the size
2. if the size is not o.k., save the motif on Your PC and re-size it using Microsoft tools like 'Paint (aka 'Paint brush') and print it again
3. cut out the outlines
4. hold the cut-out motif on Your intended painting ground and draw the outlines
5. cut out interior segments of the main motif, hold them at the right places of Your outlines drawing and draw them into it
6. draw internal details if necessary
7. paint out the segments with weather-resistant color

Of course it helps if You have little painting / drawing skills. In the same way I painted some old well-known motifs on an otherwise unsightly garage wall, BTW:

My suggestion for your translation: Hic Holly custodit or Hic Holly vigilat or perhaps Hic Holly protegit bona mea (Here Holly protects my goods).
