Shapur Shahbazi

On July 17, 2006, iranologist A. Shapur Shahbazi passed away. He was an an internationally renowned authority on pre-Islamic Iranian civilization, and no history of the Achaemenid, Parthian, and Sassanid age can be written without acknowledging his contributions to this field.

Mr. Shahbazi received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of London, was founder of the Institute of Achaemenid Research at Persepolis in 1974, and was its director until 1979. He has been a professor at the universities of Shiraz, Tehran, Göttingen, Harvard, Columbia, and Eastern Oregon. He was advisor to the recently founded Foundation for the Parsa-Pasargadae Research.

Among his seventeen books and 150 articles are important scholarly publications like The Old Persian Inscriptions of the Persepolis Platform (London 1985), fine books for the general audience like The Authoritative Guide to Persepolis (Tehran 2004), and witty articles like 'Iranians and Alexander' in the American Journal of Ancient History n.s. 2 (2003), 5-38.

Besides, professor Shahbazi contributions to Iranian studies include more than 45 articles in the Encyclopaedia Iranica, where he has also served as Associate Editor.

Mr. Shapur Shahbazi is survived by a wife and a daughter.
