Thanks for the info Dave (Hmm, how does one say 'thank you' in Latin?).

Unfortunately I'm based in Australia, and the games store in Melbourne which stocks Ral Partha ancients has not renewed their stock in a looong time. However, I remember them mentioning that they do take orders for Foundry minis from the US but of course, they'll slap on the cost of postage and packaging on top of the already exhorbitant prices, the gits.

If you want to order direct from Foundry, the postage costs are not too bad. Their site is www.wargamesfoundry.com/.
I have found them to have excellent delivery times, and the figures are well worth the extra cost. By the time you spend a few hours painting each one as a small work of art, you will have a collection that you can be proud of.
Caius I edited it to take out a load of blank lines, you must've had something on the enterkey, filled the page...
Unless the Persians fly away like birds, hide in the earth like mice, or leap into a lake like frogs, they will never see their homes again, but will die under our arrows

In the name of heaven Catiline, how long do you propose to exploit our patience..

yeah
if you make a large deal with foundry directly you will get them at a very good price and shipping shouldnt be too bad, if not there is bound to be at least one shop in OZ that you can mail order from
I'm also interested in your rules, or at any rate, the principle - I've just been reading a bit of Caesar. I have trouble visualising the battles sometimes, so I'd like to be able to play them through. that would be cool. I've emailed a local supplier about getting a suitable army. Will DBA rules do? I've never done any gaming, I'm getting into this as someone interested in the history/tactics side of things. ....
feeling a bit lost in all the possibilities!
cheers
DBA is a level game where each "stand" of figures represents a major division or legion of your army. It is a very simple game where the first army to lose 1/3rd or the general will lose. You can get DBA online, and play it on the computer to see if you like the rules at
You can download and play yourself or hotseat for free, you have to pay to play via internet.
I really have found the rules set called "Piquet" with the subset designed for ancients to give the best feel for the problems and control of battle, but so many of the move-counter-move players hate the uncertainty and the need for reserves and planning ahead, so I don't think you'll find many opponents for this rule set. I have about 40 different sets of ancients rules, many now out of print. You might enjoy "Warhammer Ancient Battles" once you build your army. I find that the presearch and painting as almost as much fun as the occassional live battles.
actually my opponent will be my husband, who is in the army and into tactics etc...so piquet could work quite well. Might try the Warhammer Ancients too, I've read they are good for fast gameplay. I'll download the DBA too, keep me occupied until my figures arrive. The painting could take a while... all those little works of art and hours debating over the most authentic colours... I see how you guys get obsessed.....!

thanks for your advice!
Well, we ended up going fro Gripping Beast 25mm (more like 28mm) Early Imperial Romans and Gauls. I'd tried painting some 15mm and although I kind of like the small size I wanted to get more individuality into the figures. I'm pretty happy with the GB figs, though the Numidian cavalry have rather mask-like faces (um, maybe they are supposed to be wearing masks? I've only ever seen Numidians without masks.) and the horse sculpting is a bit average - a flat out gallop with a tail that hangs down? I don't think so. Their command figs are nice and I particularly like the bearskins! Will post a photo once they are painted.
Had a particularly successful trip to the 2nd-hand book store - scored an as-new edition of Ann Hyland's ' Training the Roman Cavalry' and Barrl Cunliffe's book on Ancient Celts.
