Sims Modeling
#1
In case you didn't know, I like to make Roman mods for The Sims computer game. Recently, I've learned the technology that allows me to improve upon the Roman clothing I've been making for the game. I already made a Roman soldier skin, but I've long been unhappy with the quality and accuracy, so a week or so ago I undertook the daunting task of improving on my work via the creation of some fairly complex 3-D meshes.
At any rate, I've got my first draft done so to speak and I'm eager to hear any comments you have on my model:

Any constructive critisism or suggestion for improvement is greatly appreciated. Please be reasonable though. (eg. I don't want to hear that you don't like red tunics. I don't care and I've got the artistic license here. M ) However, if you think I've modeled any of the kit incorrectly or there is something you'd like to see that I haven't included, I'd like to know about it! Also, please keep in mind I do have to work around the limitations of the game which constrains the accuracy of my work to some extent.

PS. He's left handed... it's wrong I know... but I am too so I guess it rubbed off. E EM
Thanks!
That looks mighty fine Christy! About time to reinstall the Sims. Would it be possible to shorten the wooden part and lengthen the iron shaft on the pilum?
Greets
Update: I've made the changes suggested so far and taken another picture with more accurate views plus several other variations on the skin. Please don't stop with the feedback!
Hey Christy,

Looks great! Any 2nd century guys though? Also, is there any combat in your Sims game? And if so, what is it like?

2nd century? I'm not familiar with the differences... if the costume is interesting, I'd be willing to give it a shot! Anyone have any photos of themselves in appropriate dress?

As for combat, it's possible, though it might be a bit funny looking. So much of this game is what you set up to happen. I guess if you got some barbarians and didn't feed them, let them bathe, or have any fun for awhile and then invited over the Romans, they'd be in a pretty foul mood. If you make sims hate each other enough, they'll get into a big fist fight. I guess that's as close as you could come... maybe with some special hacked objects... I'd say you can do most anything but you'd have to be slightly sadistic and have a good imagination. E EM
I'm going to be working on a centurion next. I'll post pictures of him when he's done and then maybe some funny screen shots from the game so you can get an idea of how things work.
-Christy

Just a quick look tonight, sorry I'm not much help (busy, busy). Regular Infantry soldiers would usually have their scabbard/sword hanging on the right side. Centurions would have scabbard on the left side -- . Shields would be on the left side, even if the soldier was left handed.
Thanks... I knew that was wrong already actually, but I got it confused when I made the model and realized it was wrong afterwards. <!-- At any rate, I'll try to fix that if I get a chance.
-Christy

well, it looks great, much better than I could ever do! If you do the centurion, he will get an oval shield, (like auxiliaries) in most of the reconstructions. Truthfully I don't know if it was always that way or if that is artists' convention or what, but that is the way they are often shown. And the feathered or horsehair crest running from ear to ear is standard for your period. (And almost everyone agrees that Centurions wore red tunics!) (Except for a certain triumphial parade where they were given permission to wear white!)

Keep up the good work. If we didn't tease you, we wouldn't be looking!ODE EM
"Just before class started, I looked in the big book where all the world's history is written, and it said...." Neil J. Hackett, PhD ancient history, professor OSU, 1987

Don't worry... I asked for input and I really appreciate all the help I'm getting too! The centurion is proving more difficult than I originally expected, but I hope to have something up soon. (Texturing chainmail wasn't as easy as anticipated.) I'm looking most forward to doing that horsehair crest-- the main reason I wanted to make a centurion as I've been itching to try one of those.

Tiberius- Thanks for the picture... I'll see about putting that to good use. ODE EM
-Christy

I'm gonna recycle this thread!

After a long gap, which I can best ascribe to procrastination, I've finally got a prototype of the centurion I was saying that I would do earlier. I'm not as certain of the accuracy of this one, so as before, I'd appreciate any suggestions or help you can provide. Thanks in advance!
