Hadrian\'s Wall from the air
#1
One of the problems with Google Earth (and Maps) is that the high resolution coverage of Hadrian's Wall only exists for the eastern end, where there is little too see. Around 1999, a campaign began to produce high resolution aerial photos of the whole of the UK corrected against the OS map base.

Much of England and Wales are there (have a look at Caernarvon-Segontium) which means that Hadrian's Wall is available in something approaching a usable resolution. The Getmapping coverage has been available through Multimap for some time, but not really in a usable form. Now Windows Live Local has made it much more accessible. To make it easy for you to explore the Wall, start at Housesteads and go east or west ;-)

As someone who has just completed walking it (for the second time: I know it must be true as I now have the T-shirt), this is a great way of reliving the experience... from the comfort of one's own computer!

Scrolling east is the wall very close to the B6318 or what? I am losing track of the wall after a small wood: http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... e=h&lvl=17

The road (General Wade's 'Military Road') was, like the Wall, built from east to west on top of the curtain wall from the outskirts of Newcastle to this point, where it chickens out from following the Wall across the crags and, like the Vallum, takes the easy option. If you get lost, use MAGIC to trace the Wall, since the whole thing is a scheduled monument (so shows up on the scheduled monuments layer; use the layers control to turn off everything except the base mapping and the scheduling, as the World Heritage Site layer turns everything salmon pink). The combination of Windows Live Local and MAGIC is extremely useful.

I opted for the sky blue: very chic.

Wow, this is wonderful. It would appear that the Romans started some kind of wall building craze in the area! Going west, I keep wondering if I got 'the' wall or 'a' wall. It's interesting to see all the little rectangular remains of little buildings. They're all over the place.

Mind you here is all they have of Ardoch - no photos further down grr - this was one of the most fantastic forts to visit with its multiple ditches (I personally charged up and down them all and was utterly exhausted and I wasn't even carrying any gear!)

Does anyone know what the heck has happened to Windows Live Local?
I can't seem to find any of the maps I used to use there.
All previous links lead to a distinctly unfriendly web page.

Hi Duncan. I've noticed this happening a few times and thought it had vanished completely the first time. I guess (but don't know for sure) when the image (map/ap) server is down then it defaults to the almost-completely-useless search engine. Probably running on a windoze server... which would explain it ;-). I thought this Local Live thing was supposed to be one of the shinning gems in the Vista crown; plus ça change...

For Muzzaguchi, Ardoch is not there as the Getmapping coverage of Scotland is very weak and still a 'work in progress' and all you've got is the bog-standard landsat coverage.

Hmmm -- very frustrating.
I've been deliberately avoiding Google, as a silent protest against their attempts at world domination. (Not that Microsoft's record is much better.) Looks like I'll have to swallow my pride ...

Worked fine for me in Firefox 1.5.0.7 (before firing up my shiny new 2.0) at 20:43 BST. You just have to accept you may be in... the Twilight Zone... ;-) Either that or you have cache issues!

Bizarrely, it wasn't working half an hour ago, but now it is!
(And I'm well aware of the fact that I'm living in the Twilight Zone, Mike!)
