Figures by Todd McFarlane...
#1
Just an intersting note. Todd McFarlane, creator of the comic book character Spawn and Venom, is renowned for the design and detail he puts into his figures. He has made reproductions of sports players, rock bands like KISS, movie monsters, you name it. I have sent the company an e-mail asking them if they plan on doing any historical figures/soldiers. Would be awesome if he did, he seems to do things right, and is a stickler for the little things. (wouldn't an 8" roman figure with removeable armour and weapons be the greatest? Tell me that 30-50 year olds playing with toys again wouldn't be funny)
"Only Trajan could go to Dacia."
Well, nevermind. I just got a reply to the e-mail I sent and they have no plans for an undertaking like this. Oh well.
"Only Trajan could go to Dacia."
Tiberius, yes McFarlane does beatiful work and although I don't care much for his usual subjects of sports and rock stars and Spawn characters, I do love the Shrek Dragon he made, and she stands guard on top of my computer as I write.
these figures, you know, are made and painted in China where this work can be done at incredably cheap prices. I have tried to get a few Chinese manufacturers interested in this and have given away two of my books to them at a big trade fair. I think the centurion GI Joe is the first fruits of this. If I go to China, I intend to bring many thousand unpainted plastic figures and try to get them painted there. Maybe it could become a "hobby business". If it happens, I'll let you all know.
That would be great Dan, in fact, I am sure those that frequent this area would be interested also.
Dan, I'm guessing that the Chinese figure manufacturers are like an independant company/business that is contracted by companies like McFarlane's to produce and paint their figures, is this correct? Your post implies that anyone could approach such a business in China and ask them to paint their figures for a price.

Would such businesses only accept bulk custom, and not small quantities of figures, for painting (that is they'd have a minimum amount)?
Auxilia, yes, its pretty much the way you perceive it. I spoke to several companies that already made the large resin figures. They were willing to do anything providing there is enough work to make it worthwhile/profitable.
Although I would have liked to have a set of large, beautifully detailed Roman figures, I couldn't absorb the minimum order of I think 100 pieces of each. I left them copies of my books, suggesting there would be a market for them if they made them. I think that's how the 12 inch Centurion came about.
Dan, what would the approximate cost be for these figures?

Just so long as you made sure it was properly-paid workers and not political prisoners doing the work. Have you seen the footage of prisoners working naked up to the waist in vats of tanning chemicals? Its inhuman. You should read Harry Wu's book 'Troublemaker' then see if you still want to do business with the Chinese.
Who cares? It's the Roman thing to do...Slavery is a good thing, takes kids off the street where they could be having unprotected sex, and committing crimes <!-- There's nothing like a good city burning, and selling the civilians into slavery, I always say.... M Besides, what's wrong with china? Aside from the fact they eat cats and dogs?
PS - I am only kidding, btw. (Just making sure)

Actually its one of the things that amazes me about Roman society - at once so civil and refined, and so barbarous! Vivisection on dying gladiators, for heaven's sake. Torture of little Jewish children. I suppose history will look back on our own era with the same disbelief. I know a few Christians who (without actually saying so) clearly disapprove of my interest in Roman culture, for obvious reasons.

This has gone into OT...but oh well...Speaking of what people will think on our society in 500 years...I just recieved an e-mail of a Chechan cutting a russian soldiers head off with a combat knife, while he was still alive. Made me sick. Has anything changed in 2000 years? Or have we just learned to hide reality better?

I dont think the early christians were really such nice people. I think they were purposfully a severe pain for the ruling power to deal with. as far as the jewish thing goes (skirting a very sensitive area) They were mostly given extraordinary latitude to conduct their affairs, and generally when they stepped outside the bounds of acceptable behavior (to the roman governments) they were spanked as necessary. My interest in Rome has also caused me some mild embarrassment, and I'm not going to be a 'roman apologist', but I don't think they were really so wrong. especially from the standards of the time. I'm not excusing any atrocities which occured, but indeed Times really haven't changed much after all.

Edited by: Gaius Marius Aquilus at: 2/7/03 5:35:58 am
