shorts prior to the late 5th c.?

okay, in the 6th century shorts are almost common enough to rival pants, they are fairly close fitting and sit about 2" above the knee, my question is, before the 5th century what evidence do we have for them? im looking 3rd-early 5th c. any insight would be great, i cant believe it would be just a byzantine thing if they were in caontact with similar peoples as romans had contact with in their history.

for more info on the 6th century uniform see, osprey men-at-arms 247, it really is one of the best researched osprey books for ancient periods out there. i have yet to find more than minor errors in it, which are true of all books.
