scutum curvature
#1
This probably has been asked before but I'd like to ask it again. We are going to construct a new scutum press and we'd like to do it right this time. What curvature would be best for a rectangular imperial scutum?

Kind regards,

If you have a look at Matt Amt's XXth legion website, I'm pretty sure that there are details of a scutum press.

Thanks Adrian. I see he recomends a radius of 8" (diameter of 16"). Does everyone agree on that?

16" diameter is way too small. I think Matt Amt's press has a diameter of 30" or so, but I'll measure it tonight.

On this page of Matt's website, the "Improved" press is given a radius of the curve of the lower half of the press) of 13" (33.0cm) and a diameter of 19" (48.0cm) which sounds more like it.

Hi,Jef,
Here on RAT's "How-To" section are great examples of scutum presses.
I made one using the Japanese press slightly modified. It gave a good curve and was very simple and cheap to make.Check it out, I think you'll find it useful.
