Pits in space!
#1
Sorry, couldn't resist that... It used to be said that the Great Wall of China was the only man-made thing you can see from space. Thanks to the satellite coverage made accessible by Google maps/earth, Hadrian's Wall is visible around Newcastle (including the 10m stretch next to Charlie Brown's at Denton Burn) and, astonishingly, some entanglement/pitfalls apparently under excavation in Byker (or soon after) - there is some relevance to this observation, as the recently published Arbeia Journal vol.8 (2005) contains the publication report on that excavation (which enables us to date the Google images to between September 2000 and February 2001). The volume has even more on those entanglement thingies, including the ones excavated at Throckley (where the Vallum is clearly visible as a crop mark on Google maps/earth) and is well worth acquiring from the Arbeia Society.

Hey Mike, lovely photos!!

is the google sattelite renewing every week or every month?

Would be nice to see other excavations or even detect lost towns this way!

best wishes,

As I understand it, Google buy in the cheapest hi-res coverage available and where that fails fall back on low-res landsat images. Most are several years old and definitely not renewed regularly. However, they have just upgraded Google Earth and included more hi-res coverage than before.

Yep, I'm blessed with a HR coverage of my hometown!
It's about two years old though.
