UK Trip
#1
Folks,
I might be able to pull off a trip to the United Kingdom for a few days in July.

That said, if you had about four days in country, what Roman sites would you hit.

I can think of York and Hadrian's Wall of course, but what is there that you would definitely recommend to see. I was there way back in '88 and was amazed at all the Roman history I saw as a young kid, but a lot of it was over my head then, but the two above mentioned areas still stand out i my mind to this day.

I will also be traveling with my wife, who has never seen the UK, so we will also be going to a lot of the traditional all encompassing sites the UK has to offer as well.

Cheers!!

I quite enjoyed Vindolanda on Hadrian's Wall, but also Bath is an excellent trip, I picked a nice Bed and Breakfast in Chester, then road tripped, or rail tripped to several sites. I was amazed at the way everything is packed so close in the UK. A day's car journey from Manchester to Nottingham to Hexham, then over to sleep in Chester. Then back to Hexham via Hadrian's Wall west to east, and several museums...then back to the B&B in Chester. The next day, pop over to Bath via rail.... then back and visit the museums in Chester, and then off to the airport to head home to the wide open spaces on Oklahoma, where I was driving 60 miles to the airport and 45 miles to work, one way....
It must be nice to live in a country where everything is a short hop from almost anywhere!

Of course it was more fun to spend a whole week at Hadrian's wall, seeing all the sites, but then after a while, how many ruined old horrae can you see and still get excited?

I think that your wife should pay a visit to the British Museum. The Roman Britain department may still be closed, but there's a lot more to be seen. Tarbicus has recently posted some suggestions here.

Enjoy your trip!

If you go near Bath, if you're going near Reading on your way there or back to London, try to find Calleva/Silchester. besides being situated in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, it is also a site where you can get a very good idea about a Late Roman town.

Venta/Caerwent or Corinium/Cirencester would also be a good idea.

A few years back I was visiting a friend in Colchester. The castle is now a museum, and parts of the town still have the Roman walls (or so I was told).

It's not nearly as exciting as I expect Hadrian's Wall and Vindolanda or Bath, but I enjoyed it. It is only about one hour from London.

And only 30 minutes or so from my house Mike!! If you visit Colchester in your itinerary, let me know and i'll meet you there! There's some great sections of roman town wall still in great condition aside from the museum!

On my trip to Scotland i also stopped to visit Hadrian's wall - the wall at Hexam is very beautifull. Vindolanda & Housesteads are also great to see. The Roman heritage museum is also fun to see (it also has some paintings from Graham Sumner)
