Unfortunately, the Roman Britain room is closed until the start of next year. I was actually there today with my parents. But there are plenty of other artefacts to be seen of Roman, Greek, Egyptian, etc, etc origin.

Get this up on your screen:

This is what I'd do if I had one hour:

I'd start by going up the broad staircase to your left (South Stairs) to the Upper Floor, straight ahead for the Sutton Hoo display (Room 41), turn around, have a good look around at some mind boggling exquisite metalwork and craft. Back towards the staircase but veer left to the Money exhibition without going down the stairs (Room 68 ). Through there into the Ancient Rome and Greece exhibitions and go to the opposite wall where there are patera, etc, then going right (Room 69). Be sure to see the Roman armour in the central display cases near the next doorway.

Then keep walking and looking into Room 70, don't miss the crocodile armour ( my mistake, not the Dendra Panoply which is completely different, I know, just typed the wrong thing ) to the right. After that to the left is the Sword of Tiberius facing away from you - don't miss it!. Keep walking and looking, go past the stairwell (59) aaaallllllll the way through Egypt, until you're in the very last room there (Room 65) and go to the far left corner where there are Roman-Egyptian shoes and arrows, etc.

Turn around, and back the way you came until you come to the corridor dividing Egypt from Greece with a stairwell (59 again) to your right and go down the stairs with the mosaics on the walls. At the next floor down (ground floor) turn right into Room 4. Have a good look around, past the pillars, etc. Then, with the shop to your left, turn right, and you have Ancient Greece and Lycia, and Parthenon exhibits.

There are even more downstairs from that floor, which can be accessed from the last stairwell you came down.

Do make sure to get the feel of the Great Court . Fantastic piece of architecture.

I think that covers Ancient Cultures of Roman and Greek origin and related. :?

Also note that you can use a camera, even with flash if desired. At least I have been anyway.

And don't forget the Roman (?) crocodile armour opposite the sword of Tiberius. Incidently, the Fulham sword and Ribchester helmet are on display in the ground floor room behind the swanky gift shop.

If you can fight your way through the swarm of Japanese, there are two of the finest Fayum portraits in existence on display in one of the mummy rooms. A chance to look at a life portrait of a Roman man and woman (and what a woman!).

The Romano British galleries will be open from May/April next year.

April is what they said anyhow, but you know what builders are like. I'm hoping that the new display will have the BM ring pommel sword at last.

Great, five months behind schedule already in true British fashion. It was "re-opening in January" not five months ago.
