Caligae and foot pain....help?

We have a member with fallen arches. His boots are made for him with an extra piece of shoulder leather inserted under the arch between the upper two layers of the sole.

On the subjuct of flat footfall, I too march with a deliberately flat footfall which is akin to gently stamping as one walks and find that although I still get differential wear on my hobnails it is not as marked as on some of the other men's boots. What extra wear there is on the heals simply indicates that I haven't quite mastered the flat footfall yet.

To add to Celer's mention of even wear on actual caligae, every human footprint I remember having seen on Roman tiles, whether shod or not, seemed to indicate a fairly flat footfall.
