HaT\'s 1/72 Imperial Legion troop TEST SHOTS up! Pics inside.
#1
Yup. Lookin' ok. These are test shots, remember, and the finished product will be "cleaner." The soldiers will have crests on their helmets that can easily be cut off. I guess this is for anyone who thinks that Legionares all wore horse hair crests in battle with imperial gallic helmets.

A little flashing on helmet (which is from the crest not comming out right), sword blade missing. Pretty good!

Crest is lose, pilum looks bent and not completely formed, but pretty good.

Missing front of crest, pilum didn't turn out right. I hope the back support for that pilum isn't that noticable.

To me that seems like a damn awkward way to throw a pilum, but I've never thrown one. It seems a bit thin to me as well, but I can be wrong there. I have no first hand experience with them.

I guess he's holding that sword at an angle, otherwise the blade is too narrow. Crest missing.

Mail armor! Flashing and crest, but looks good!

More mail armor! Pilum is practically non existent, but its just a preview.

Scale armor with shoulder doublings! HaT seems to like this pose, but it just doesn't look natural to me. Perhaps when I see it in 1/72 it'll be a bit more natural to me. Pilum and crest again, no biggie. I kinda like the sword dangling in front, adds character and movement, but I'd think that most Romans would tuck the baldrics under the belts so the scabard wasn't flying everywhere. If you don't secure it, the thing would be slappin' all over if battle got a bit frenzied. (ideally though, it wouldn't.)

Here are the master figures to compare to:

Other than the pilum thrower, everything looks great to me! I wonder what scale they do the masters in? Surely those are not 1/72.

Also... AUXILLERIES!

Mmm, yum.

They've always gotta have one guy slashing, ya know? But its an ignorant non-citizen, we'll forgive him. Sword looks smaller than it should.

No other auxillery previews...I hope the test batch didn't turn out real bad, I want these puppies painted and in my collection ASAP

Here are the auxillery masters:

Note auxillery holding rectangular shield. I think Traianius' column shows an Auxillery with a rectangular shield. I've seen a few small debates over this, but nothing conclusive. I'll digress for the moment.

As a bonus, here's some stuff that I'm really salivating over: HaT command figures and "heavy" Legions from the Dacian Wars. (not posting all images here, you can find all of this at: http://www.hat.com/Future3A.html )

Centurio!

Aux. Archer!

Scale Armor!

Arm guards! Greaves!

I'll leave the rest to you if you want to see the other previews of those above. If any 56ker was foolish to load all of this, I apologize.

In general, I'm really excited about these figures!
He's got scale armor, thats different from the Ermine Guard fellow's mail.

Besides, how many Centurion miniatures out there are specifically based on that one reconstruction? Out of all of my miniature experience, I can't think of any. ESCI, those figures have been around about as long, Italeri, the Centurio in their box of Caesarian era inffantry is nothing like that.

Vaguely I know what you mean, but I can't place a single example.

I had seen several of these around lately, and I had seen the ESG on the History Intl Channel the other night so it was fresh in my head
Thats clearly based on the ESG guy, but if it were a strict reproduction, he should have a white horsehair creast rather than a red feather one.

Avete, omnes!

I was just looking at the figures (VERY nice btw...) and I too was struck by how much the centurio looked like Chris - in fact, a friend had some photos of the ESG that he took while on his honeymoon, and one piccie of the Guard had Chris yelling at one of the tiros (or so it appeared in the photo, at least), and it could be a duplicate of the figure...
